Um, the Hebrew word means to receive 00:00:47:28 - 00:00:51:11 or be receptive is much older than most people think. 00:00:51:13 - 00:00:54:08 A scholars usually dated about, uh, 1250. 00:00:56:17 - 00:00:57:27 It was only called by that name. 00:00:57:27 - 00:01:00:06 But really you are talking about the perennial teaching, 00:01:00:06 - 00:01:03:16 which occurs in all traditions, whether it be Taoism 00:01:03:22 - 00:01:06:23 or in Sufism, uh, the Zoroastrian traditions. 00:01:07:13 - 00:01:09:23 And even among the, so-called primitive peoples, 00:01:10:02 - 00:01:13:14 you have these same archetypal ideas, the origin 00:01:13:15 - 00:01:17:17 of existence, the purpose of the universe, uh, 00:01:17:21 - 00:01:20:23 the relationship of human beings to the universe 00:01:20:27 - 00:01:22:03 and to the Holy One. 00:01:23:06 - 00:01:24:28 And they come through in various forms 00:01:25:13 - 00:01:28:29 and Kabbalah is of a particular interest to us in the West 00:01:28:29 - 00:01:32:20 because it in fact underlies the traditions of, uh, Judaism 00:01:32:26 - 00:01:34:03 and Christianity and Islam. 00:01:36:21 - 00:01:40:14 The notion of angels, paradise, all these things come from 00:01:40:14 - 00:01:41:14 that biblical root. 00:01:43:29 - 00:01:46:20 However, the teaching, of course, 00:01:46:20 - 00:01:48:29 is much older than the Bible. 00:01:49:14 - 00:01:52:02 It goes right back into remote antiquity. 00:01:54:09 - 00:01:58:24 The story goes according to the old rabbis that when Adam 00:01:58:27 - 00:02:01:00 and Eve were cast out of Eden, 00:02:02:00 - 00:02:05:24 and they fell from grace, the Holy One sent the great 00:02:05:27 - 00:02:09:02 Archangel Raziel, which means the angel, 00:02:09:04 - 00:02:12:09 of secrets, to give them a book 00:02:13:28 - 00:02:16:29 Which would allow them to reenter paradise. 00:02:18:07 - 00:02:19:24 And this book was passed down 00:02:19:24 - 00:02:21:08 through the various generations, 00:02:22:03 - 00:02:25:08 and it was almost lost at certain points in prehistory. 00:02:25:28 - 00:02:27:19 Uh, it was the time of 00:02:27:22 - 00:02:29:25 Noah when humanity became extremely evil 00:02:30:05 - 00:02:33:08 and was almost wiped off from the face of the earth. 00:02:34:04 - 00:02:35:20 And there was one particular time 00:02:36:12 - 00:02:39:28 where it was said there was only one righteous human being, 00:02:40:00 - 00:02:43:04 and that was a man called Enoch, Hanoch, which means 00:02:43:25 - 00:02:44:29 the initiated one. 00:02:45:27 - 00:02:50:15 And he, in his various processes of meditation, would rise 00:02:52:04 - 00:02:55:18 Up Through his interior world into the higher worlds. 00:02:56:04 - 00:02:59:10 And there he would be shown the, uh, angelic worlds 00:02:59:10 - 00:03:01:28 and the archangelic worlds and the demonic worlds. 00:03:02:29 - 00:03:06:11 And at one particular point in his development, 00:03:07:07 - 00:03:10:18 he was taken right through into the seventh heaven. 00:03:11:00 - 00:03:13:28 He was taken beyond tradition, says the curtain 00:03:14:02 - 00:03:17:00 beyond which even the archangels could not penetrate. 00:03:17:12 - 00:03:20:15 And there he was given the secrets of existence,
